3 Step IT Annual Report 2018 - Flipbook - Page 10
“We strive to close the IT-circle and make sure we reuse as much
possible of all the resources that go through our logistic centres.
It is our mission to make the circular economy a reality.”
Remarketing provides the service that lies at
the heart of 3 Step IT’s sustainability promise.
With refurbishing centres in Finland, Norway,
Malaysia, Sweden and the UK, it takes endof-lease devices, erases their data, performs
minor repairs and refurbishes them for resale,
achieving a 97% resale rate.
The number of items handled has been growing
fast: a 13% rise in 2018, followed a 38% increase
in 2017. Altogether, Remarketing handled
478,463 devices in 2018. This growth came from:
While its prime purpose is end-of-lease
assets, remarketing has an expanding ‘buy-in’
business. This purchases the used devices that
organisations have replaced and then handles
them with the same care: erasing data to remove
data privacy and security risks, refurbishing the
devices to resell if possible, and recycling if not.
• Our smartphone business, a new category
of device to handle with our assured data
erasure processes, typically on a 2-3 year
• Rental sales in 2015-2016, with devices
returned after 3-4 years’ use.
• Increasing buy-in quantities.
As well as handling more devices, we started
various types of repair to improve our
refurbishing processes. The pilot program
started in our facility in Klavreström in Sweden,
etching keyboards, replacing broken screens and
disk drives, often using parts from other devices,
damaged beyond economic repair. We have
even found a market for damaged smartphone
screens: removing the glass leaves circuitry that
has a spare part value.
When we sell a reconditioned device,
responsibility for disposal passes to the new
owner, so we developed our trading partner
network to sell only in countries with reliable
e-waste disposal programs. Fitting this aim,
our largest single market for these devices is in

The countries included in 'other' were Croatia, Austria, Slovenia, Norway, Denmark, Czech Republic, France & Lithuania.
EVEN MORE SUSTAINABLE
2019 to speed the buy-in process by making
instant offers for used equipment; and to give
traders a portal so they can see equipment and
order it, as soon as it becomes available.
The refresh cycle helps to plan for growth:
initial rental sales gives a forecast of part of our
business with a two to three year lead-time. To
cope with the forecast growth we opened a new
remarketing facility in Finland earlier in 2018,
doubling our refurbishing capacity.
With inventory that devalues by about 2% per
month, speed is critical. These improvements
will accelerate the production cycle, to improve
margins as well as services to sellers and buyers.
Investing in production capacity is not enough.
The organisation is now working to use its new
capacity more effectively. Production planning
has already reduced costs and improved energy
use. New systems will come on stream during
The production capacity is available today. New
buying and selling services start later in 2019:
