IMPACT OF FUNDING
SUSTAINABILITY
THROUGH
HYDROPONICS AND
AQUACULTURE
T
he U Fund continues to support
and enhance STEM projects around
the school, including the school
hydroponic lab. High school students are
exploring the factors of plant growth while
making edible greens, such as lettuce and
spring salad mix. The next step is linking these
systems with the aquaponic system, where
students will learn about sustainability through
hydroponics (plant cultivation without the use
of soil) and aquaculture (fish cultivation). Its
largest appeal comes from its lack of waste
and required maintenance — a huge plus for
sustainability and eco-friendliness.

Library Funding
The UHS library is the happy home of many enthusiastic
readers. To maintain a dynamic library collection responsive to
their needs, our librarians regularly purchase newly published
and student-requested books
throughout the school year. The
funding received from the U Fund
makes it possible for librarians
to continue that endeavor and
keep the library functioning
in an exemplary way for the
students we serve. It enables
our librarians to meet curriculum
needs in all subject areas as well
as independent reading needs,
fostering our strong community
of readers and building lifelong
literacy habits.
Michael Goodner and John
Thomas Hart (7th Grade) unbox
some of the new books recently purchased. Charity Cantey
said, "Michael and John Thomas
asked every day for months
when the new books would
arrive and were so excited, they
couldn't wait to help unbox
them!"
