IMPACT OF FUNDING
MIDDLE SCHOOL
GUEST
SPEAKERS
Jesse Haynes and Lance Pekus presented to each grade of
middle school, discussing their new book (The Ninja Games:
The Warrior Within), and overcoming adversity in life. Through
donations to the U Fund, each middle school student received a
book, and the students loved the action-packed adventure novel.
“Even better was that many students who aren’t avid readers and
had not started the book read the book after the presentation.
This was the goal. It was by far the best author’s visit we have
had,” shared 6th grade RWW instructor, Jill Calloway. A small
group of students had lunch with the authors, which led to
some great small group discussions, and there have been two
writers’ workshop discussions with 15 students each. Lance and
Jesse plan to keep in touch with the students and want to have
a follow-up Zoom meeting with those small groups to get the
students’ thoughts and input about the sequel.
Blue Bash
CREATING COMFY LEARNING SPACES
The “under the sea” carpet provides a comfortable, bright spot in
Mrs. Goodner’s 2nd grade class for whole group and small group
learning. It brightens up the classroom and makes it very inviting
when students enter. Math rotations, reading groups, and read
alouds happen here every day!
ULS teachers, current and past, were honored
at the Blue Bash in March, celebrating the
dedication and hard work that led to the
National Blue Ribbon School distinction.
Nearly 200 guests attended the event in the
South Stadium Club of LSU’s Tiger Stadium
and enjoyed hors d’oeuvres, entertainment
provided by the U-High Jazz Band, and a toast
from secondary principal Frank Rusciano.
