Endowments: The Gift that Keeps Giving
by Paul Harasim
The Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine, which will graduate its second class in May and is expected to have its
state-of-the-art medical education building ready for occupancy this fall, has received gifts totaling more than
$4 million to endow chairs in orthopaedics and obstetrics and
gynecology.
The Optum Dr. Tony and Renee Marlon Endowed Chair in the
Department of Orthopaedics re昀氀ects a $2.5 million investment
that the donors shared. OptumCare Nevada is the state’s largest
multispecialty medical group. Dr. Marlon, the former chief of cardiology at UMC, founded Sierra Health Services, which became
part of UnitedHealthcare.
Michael Daubs, MD, professor and chair of the medical school’s
department of orthopaedics, has been installed as the 昀椀rst endowed chair.

“To be awarded the 昀椀rst endowed chair is really an honor,” said
Dr. Daubs, a Las Vegas native who created the 昀椀rst orthopaedics
residency program in Nevada. “The endowment allows me and
our faculty to build the program further.”
The Intermountain Healthcare of Nevada Endowed Chair in Obstetrics
and Gynecology is the result of a $2 million gift from Intermountain, a
nonpro昀椀t healthcare organization which is ranked in the top 昀椀ve U.S.
health systems for quality, cost and innovation. The organization’s
reach extends across 25 hospitals, 225 clinics, a medical group with
2,600 employed physicians and advanced practice clinicians, a health
insurance company called SelectHealth, and services in Nevada, Idaho,
and Utah. A nationwide search will be conducted for the 昀椀rst holder of
this endowed chair.
Said Paul Krakovitz, Intermountain Region President: “Intermountain
recognizes the immediate and long-term needs for healthcare practitioners in our community. This endowment will allow Intermountain
and UNLV to drive the women’s health narrative in Southern Nevada
and create a sustainable pipeline for the brightest young minds to serve
Southern Nevada for decades.”

Marc J. Kahn, MD, dean of the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine,
says that endowment funds will play a large role in the success of the
school.
“They provide support for medical education and research today, tomorrow, and far into the future,” he said. “Endowments are investments
whose earnings are allocated each year to help support the program or
area designated, while the remaining money remains in the endowment
fund and continues to earn interest (the gift’s principal is not touched).
As a result, the endowment lives on forever.”
