At 28 million hectares, an area slightly larger
than the size of the United Kingdom, the Sahtu
First Nations region is one of the largest in
the North American Boreal Forest. Though
it is threatened by extractive industries and
powerful demand for oil and gas, wood fiber, and
commercial fishing, this region holds enormous
potential to be a global exemplar of selfdetermined Indigenous guardianship. Working
in solidarity with the Indigenous Leadership
Initiative (ILI), Nia Tero is supporting Sahtu Dene
First Nations efforts to secure national support
and guardianship of their customary territory.
