In August, Active Shooter training was completed with all front-line of昀椀cers. This training was performed on the University of Hartford Campus, while their students were on summer break. Performing this training at physical location that of昀椀cers may actually respond to added signi昀椀cant value to
the training. During the month of September, Use of Force training was conducted at the Parker
Recreation Center, 2621 Main Street, Hartford CT. This was a hands-on training event with police
batons, handcuffs and OC spray. In October, a Method of Instruction class was completed for new
police instructors. By creating new police instructors, we continue to build different training programs
that will sustain the program for years to come. The 昀椀nal training events for 2021 were conducted
in November and December.
This training was around stop sticks and motor vehicle extractions. While of昀椀cers receive stop stick
training in the academy, it had been some time since most of昀椀cers had used any stop sticks. The
training included both classroom and actual stop stick deployments in a training environment. The
motor vehicle extractions were speci昀椀c for non-combative, but uncooperative operators that refuse
to exit a vehicle during a lawful stop. The techniques were shown in a classroom setting and then
performed in scenarios at 50 Williams Street. The preferred outcome of this training was to reduce
the level of force used by an of昀椀cer in these situations by giving them proper techniques.

The Hartford Police Academy will continue to provide the best possible training available for our current and new of昀椀cers. The newly renovated Hartford Police Academy is anticipated to open in 2022,
which will provide additional opportunities for enhanced and expanded training.
