Creating Resources with TeachVid - by Dominique Sénard
3.2. Captions
At this stage, you are breaking down the transcript (and hence, in the next step, the video) into
several parts. This is important both for ‘Learn Mode’ and ‘Activity Mode’.
In ‘Learn Mode,’ as the video plays, each part of the transcript is highlighted. This is when you
decide when the breaks will appear on the transcript.
As explained in the blog,‘this is the point at which you need to create the individual captions which
form the basis of TeachVid’s interactive activities’ in Activity Mode.
You will notice that the transcript has automatically been broken into numbered caption bubbles
using line breaks.
Tips:
- It’s most important to split the transcript according to the audio. If there is a natural pause, use
this.
- Aim for captions that are not too long and not too short (bear in mind that the captions will be
displayed in the caption bar beneath the video during playback).
- Aim, if possible, at captions that are equal in length as it makes the activities work better.
- Be careful of the total number of captions. This is a good piece of advice from the blog: ‘Each
TeachVid activity is broken down into mini-tasks based on the captions, as specified by you. Try
to make it so that your resource has a reasonable number of these mini-tasks per activity.
(Minimum of around 10? No more than 40 if you can avoid it.)’
