Creating Resources with TeachVid - by Dominique Sénard
Introduction
TeachVid is a video-based online platform for students learning foreign languages. Students access
short YouTube videos and complete a wide range of online activities based on the transcript.
TeachVid is ideal for independent learning but can also be used with devices and headphones in
class.
There are hundreds of ready-made activities available in several languages, 10% of which are fully
available even without registration.
It is free to register and use. Once registered, teachers can organise live sessions using these featured
resources or print the worksheets which are automatically generated. Teachers can also create their
own resources. With a free registration, you can create up to 5 resources. If you use the paid version,
you can create as many resources as you want. For a full guide on the main features of TeachVid
click here, for a guide on the paid version click here.
To create your own resources on TeachVid, you can either use a video and its transcript you have
found on YouTube, or you can create your own video (A guide on how to create a simple video with
PowerPoint is coming soon on the PPLI website), upload it to YouTube and use it to create a
TeachVid resource.
This guide will look at TeachVid using a video found on YouTube.
Which YouTube video shall I choose?
When choosing the video, consider the transcript very carefully. Keeping in mind that the main aim
of TeachVid is to get students to engage with the video transcript, the video should be short and
clear. A thirty second video can be extremely useful if the transcript is full of the structures and
vocabulary the students need to progress. Plus, it is so much quicker to create.
Having said that, for senior cycle or TY, you might consider using songs with more complex
transcripts, especially if they have a social or cultural aspect you can exploit before and after the
students use TeachVid. It can be time-consuming to create a TeachVid resource from a song but
it’s worthwhile. Once you have created your first resource, the second one will take half the time to
set up.
