By implementing simple fixes and reorganising existing
pack benches such as providing carton toast racks to
house the most used sized cartons, to carton shadow
boards that allowed temporary workers to select the right
sized carton within seconds. These quick fixes allowed
Harrods operation team in peak 2021 to pack and send
50,000 more parcels v’s the same time the previous year
with only half the number of temporary workers required
and an eradication of the need for external fulfilment

Outstanding customer experience is paramount to Harrods
and therefore an update of existing carton styles included
an easy tear opening and a branded internal carton.
This would improve product reveal and ultimately enhance the customer’s
experience. Simply changing a standard 0201 carton to a crash lock base
with self-seal strip provided a reduction in pack time from 4 minutes per
pack down to 2 minutes per pack.

By implementing an easy tear strip, it removed the need for the customer
to use knives or scissors to open the parcels and provided a simple to
open solution. Upon opening customers are greeted instantly with the
recognisable Harrods branding providing a fantastic product reveal aligned
with customer expectations of shopping with such a prestigious brand.

The business has invested in training best practice with the packaging
staff, measuring process with ‘Time in Motion’ studies, identifying waste
in material, time and process.
The introduction of paper void systems delivered a major environmental
benefit from years of ‘Bubble Wrap’ usage with 50 trucks of bubble wrap
being replaced with just 1 truck of paper equivalent. Introducing paper
tape systems and reducing pallet wrapping usage by over 75% are further
gains established by the Harrods and Zeus teams.
