Development of Chinese Language and Culture Learning Opportunities (2.B.4)
Action Progress
Having successfully recruited 6 teachers and having
provided CPD and mentoring, PPLI commenced research
on road-mapping suitable ways of qualifying teachers to
teach Chinese at the level of Leaving Certificate and
facilitating the establishment of quality ITE programmes in
HE for such purposes.
PPLI has also been working with experienced teachers to support the provision and development of quality
teaching resources and tools. A new set of TY Chinese language modules were created with the input of a
group of native and Irish Chinese teachers. The new module was also adopted by teachers within and beyond
PPLI to deliver a more language study-centred TY module and offer students a more objective vision of
studying the language towards their LC. PPLI also developed a series of tools to facilitate and distinguish the
planning for different Chinese programmes in schools (e.g., LC, TY and JCSC).
In response to the impact of the pandemic, PPLI worked with relevant stakeholders to address the shortage
of teachers for Chinese programmes in schools, particularly the provision of TY Chinese.
With shared information and collaboration, PPLI
endeavoured to maximise the support for schools
and teachers, working with different partners. As a
result, a supportive community of Chinese teachers
has been established on Facebook, with 75 active
members and expanding steadily.
