Under the Credit Based Choice System-Learning Outcome based Curriculum Framework
scheme of the University of Delhi, the History Department at St Stephen’s offers fourteen
Discipline Core courses, four Discipline-specific Elective courses (in the V and VI semesters) and
two Skill Enhancement courses to students of B. A. (Honours) History (in the III and IV
semesters). We also offer four Generic Elective courses that are interdisciplinary to students of
other Departments. To the B. A. Programme students, we offer four Discipline Core, two
Discipline-specific Elective, four Skill Enhancement and two Generic Elective courses.
The Discipline Core and Elective courses constitute the bedrock of the History Honours
programme. Broadly, they cover the ancient, medieval and modern history of the Indian
subcontinent; the history of the major ancient and medieval civilizations of the world; the history
of the early modern and modern Western world, and the modern history of Eastern Asia.
Additionally in the third year, in the category of Discipline-Specific Elective courses, students can
choose from the histories of China, Japan, South East Asia, USA and USSR. Similarly, in the
second year, under the category of Skill Enhancement courses, we offer exciting fieldwork based
courses on Archives and Museums, and Popular Culture.
In these courses, students study the broad political, economic and socio-cultural processes that
constitute the historical journey of societies, in all their interconnections and through changes and
continuities. Students get the opportunity to study the history of state formations, economic
transformations and socio-cultural phenomena that constitute the present. In the process they
explore themes such as the experiences of early human communities; the rise and decline of
