B.A. (HONOURS) SANSKRIT
The Department of Sanskrit offers the Sanskrit Honours Programme under the CBCS- LOCF
scheme. This programme provides to learners a glimpse of the rich and varied knowledge
traditions of India. The main strength of the programme is that it offers multiple opportunities to
students interested in Indian history, society, culture, philosophy, language studies and literature
to get first-hand information from original sources.
It introduces students to various genres of Sanskrit literature: from the early Vedic to Classical
prose, poetry and drama, to the contemporary. They get to read samples from major Sanskrit
poets like Ashvaghosha, Bhasa, Kalidasa, Bana, Dandi, Bharavi and Vishakhadatta in the
original. Contemporary Sanskrit poets like Pandita Kshama Rao, Dr. Radhavallabh Tripathi,
Prof. RevaPrasad Dwivedi and Abhidhana Rajendra Mishra are prominent names in the module
on modern Sanskrit literature.
Traditional disciplines like vyakarana, darshana, natyshastra and kavvyashastra also form a part
of the curriculum. The course has modules on Indian society and polity, linguistics and
philosophy of language, Indian logic and debate, ontology and epistemology, aesthetics and
Indian theatre. Further, to equip Sanskrit students for the study of Indian history, there is a course
in epigraphy, paleography and chronology.
