IT was a dream she had cherished since
childhood and now Eilidh McIntyre
can say that there are not one, but two
Olympic gold medalists in the family.
The 27-year-old raced to glory in the
470-class sailing championship in Tokyo
last month, watched on by her parents Mike
and Caroline and all their friends at Hayling
Island Sailing Club where Eilidh learnt to
sail when she was just a small girl.
Amazingly, she was following in her
father’s footsteps – he scooped a gold medal
in sailing at the Seoul Olympics in 1988.
Eilidh, who was brought up on the Island
and whose parents still live here, said she
has been buoyed by the support of everyone
on Hayling. She said: ‘It has been my home
for such a long time and it always will be.
‘To go back there and back to the sailing
club has been phenomenal. Even before
Tokyo, every time I went there people were
wishing me well, saying they believed in
me. It means so much.’
n Turn to the back page, then page 47, for Eilidh McIntyre celebrates glory in Tokyo.
