and be part of, less about traditional observance
and more about a lived experience,” she says.
For JCC Greater Boston, having an educator on
staff also allows Jewish educational input into
institution-wide efforts such as the diversity,
equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiative.
“I get to be part of thinking through DEI and what
are the Jewish values that help us move that
forward,” she says.
Liz sees the JCC’s role as a platform for encountering Jewish life.
“We live in a society where all the information we
need is in our pocket, in our iPhone,” she says. “I
don’t need someone to memorize the genealogies in
the Bible, because if they want that at some point in
their lives, it’s easy to find that information. My job
is to help kids find a connection so that they’ll want
to find the information. So that they’ll know that
Judaism has something to say to their lives, at
whatever point in their lives they might be.”
As she sees it, when someone steps into the JCC,
they may be undecided or ambivalent about what
role Judaism plays in their lives, but they came to the
JCC because they know what it is: a diverse Jewish
community where everyone can feel they belong.
