PEOPLE AT
THE HEART
OF IT ALL
Disasters happen when hazards intersect with populations.
MORE THAN A MISSION
As populations continue to grow, so do the risks for vulnerable
communities around the world. Densely populated areas
are exposed to a higher severity of hazards, such as urban
earthquakes, hurricanes along the coast, and the rapid spread
of diseases.
While population growth is an important factor in determining
the hazard vulnerability of the community, who is being affected
is equally important.
For most people, living in a hazard-exposed area is not a choice.
And investing in risk-reducing measures, like insurance and
social protection, isn’t an option. Disasters are indiscriminate,
and communities with limited opportunities to manage risks
and strengthen resilience are unequally affected.
With conflict and violence around the world taking shape
in different forms, the socio-economic makeup of affected
populations continues to be a key attribute in the level of risk
of disaster, as well as the need for humanitarian aid.
