Spotlight on Schools, A Treasure Hunt as a Whole-School, Awareness-Raising Activity
How was the project successful?
This was a really successful project which is now part of the school calendar.
Students who were studying Chinese or who are heritage speakers, took ownership of the event and enjoyed using
the language in their school, as well as teaching and sharing it with peers. This boosted their confidence and
motivation for learning the language.
Students who do not currently study Chinese were actively participating in this event. They worked hard for red
envelopes and tried to complete the target language tasks as well. They enjoyed the activities and became much
more aware of the Chinese learners and speakers in the school.
Would this activity be adaptable for other MFLs?
Yes. The ‘Treasure Hunt’ activity can be adapted for any language. However, such an event requires a whole-school
approach and support from the wider school community. For that, I am very thankful for the support from the
school and the principal Mr. Niall Hare.
What have you learned from organising this activity?
This is the first time I organised this activity. In the future, the preparations, such as making the decorations and gifts,
could be completed by the TY students through some handicraft activities. This would better integrate cultural
awareness and also help control the budget to make the event even more sustainable.
