I just want to show
my appreciation for Lue and
all she does. I have now gained
work which I’m enjoying,
so I couldn’t be happier.

Moira’s Story
When I retired 6 years
ago, I joined a beginners
art class. I was not at all
confident to start with, but the class
helped me to pick up a pencil and
we were encouraged in so many
ways to explore various mediums.
The opportunity to display a
piece of work in York Learning’s
Inspirations exhibition encouraged
my personal progress and inspired
others to explore various classes.
Following my beginners drawing
class, I felt encouraged to explore
more widely. I tried other classes
and started to experiment with
watercolours which I found could
transfer into textiles. I joined
specialist classes with other
providers, but I feel the background
of York Learning classes gave me the
confidence to explore.
During lockdown, I began playing
with printing botanicals on
watercolour paper, using skills I
learnt on a lino print class with
York Learning, and skills a friend had
taught me whilst printing on textile.
A friend encouraged me to apply
to York Open Studios and I was
accepted! At first, I thought ‘how
on earth did I get here?!’, when my
working life was in Social Work, but
by the time the weekends came
around, there I was in my dining
room wearing my Artist badge
explaining to people how I achieved
my various prints!
