Foreword
I welcome this annual report by Post-Primary Languages Ireland, in the context of their ongoing role in
implementing key actions of Languages Connect – Ireland’s Strategy for Foreign Languages in Education. This
strategy aims to support better learning of foreign languages in the Irish education system and to increase the
diversity of provision for the inherent benefits to individuals, society and the economy.
I would like to congratulate PPLI on the continued volume of work that they have managed to accomplish in
midst of an exceptionally challenging time. These challenges notwithstanding, during this time period the PPLI
more than doubled the number of schools and students participating in #ThinkLanguages, in which 150 schools
and 12,000 TYs from all over Ireland joined in a national celebration of languages. It is an inspiring example of
how an event that pivoted from being in just one venue to being in schools nationwide.
PPLI continued to encourage teachers to work with innovative methodologies, the team and the new teachers
worked to implement the new language subjects with CPD and support provided online. Blended learning
offered more access to the new subjects, CLIL was progressed, and so much more, demonstrating a resilience
and response that is to be commended.
PPLI also helped us with implementing the new ‘Say Yes to Languages”, primary sampler languages module which
I launched last year, and I am delighted with the progress in this regard. The module has been warmly and
positively welcomed by over 500 schools. Over 40,000 pupils have had the opportunity to learn and have fun
through a range of languages, opening doors for them to the languages used by their classmates.
