PPLI supports the provision of Portuguese through Transition Year and Leaving Certificate classes.
Leaving Certificate Online Classes
The academic year 2021-2022 will see the first cohort of students sitting Portuguese for Leaving Certificate
as a curricular language. As part of a pilot to ascertain the suitability of online teaching and learning for this
course and to continue to facilitate 6th years students, the Saturday classes for both 5th and 6th years
students were delivered fully online. This has allowed students from all over the country to enroll in the
course. In the academic year 2020-2021, 25 students enrolled in the course which is facilitated by 3 teachers
employed by PPLI.
To provide expertise in online teaching, as well as technical support for teachers and students, PPLI enlisted
the support of H2L in this project.
Transition Year Classes
PPLI helps schools to include Portuguese in Transition Year by providing teachers and resources. PPLI teachers
deliver Transition Year classes in 14 post-primary schools across four counties. In order to do this, they receive
support and CPD from PPLI.
These classes diversify the range of languages on offer in Transition Year, increase the number of schools
offering more than one foreign language as part of their TY programme, and continue support for home
languages in schools where there are a significant number of students from a Portuguese-speaking
background.
