Enlist the Support of Embassies
Action 3.A.2
1700 accredited grades
PPLI work closely with many of the embassies in the context of awareness raising. Activities that arose from
such collaboration in 2021 include the following:
In the context of the adapted Leaving Cert in 2021 the Department of Education decided to provide
accredited grades to all 1700 students registered for the non-curricular languages. As a result of relationships
that PPLI has fostered with the embassies it was possible to receive introductions to, train, and contract
assessors of 16 different languages
Embassies provided pre-recorded workshops for #ThinkLanguages which facilitated participating students to
experience CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) in different target country contexts and enjoy
the experience of either learning a new language or learning a language they know in context.
PPLI was able to provide taster classes in 17 languages as part of Culture Night 2021 as a result of assistance
and support from the embassies.
PPLI supported the Department of Education in implementing a new pilot programme to facilitate the
employment of Visiting Spanish Teachers in Ireland based on a Memorandum of Understanding between the
Department of Education in Ireland and the Ministry of Education and Culture of Spain. This programme is
designed to supply more teachers to Irish schools to increase access to language learning and expand
opportunities to develop intercultural skills and relationships which may encourage more schools' exchanges
in the future.
PPLI work with embassies to encourage more Irish graduates to spend time abroad to build much needed
capacity in foreign languages in our labour market. For example, PPLI works closely with the embassies
involved in sending English Language Assistants abroad to promote increased uptake on the programme,
assists the Japanese embassy with interviews for graduates to go to Japan on the JET programme and
provides a pre-departure presentation for participants to encourage them to learn the language and
consider teaching upon return.
Embassies assist PPLI with disseminating information to parents and students in relation to language
learning opportunities available e.g., as a result of dissemination by the Chinese embassy of information on
sessions provided by PPLI for parents and students 750 attendees received info on the new Chinese Leaving
Certificate examination.
PPLI provide input to the embassies on workshops and training provided by embassies to improve the
quality of teaching and learning in Ireland e.g. in 2021 PPLI worked with the French Embassy to provide
‘Drama in the classroom’ CPD for teachers as part of Université d’été and training for Foreign Language
Assistants.
