name Didier — whispers, “Look everyone, headlights.”
Everyone is relieved to see Carlos. Marta rushes to the van
as he steps out, scolding him for making her wait. Carlos,
recalling the recent events and his uncle’s last words,
looks at Marta and says, “Emilio sacrificed himself for
us. I came here to tell you that you all need to leave now.”
“What do you mean ‘you all?’” asks Blocchain, stepping towards Carlos, “You mean to tell me we spent the
last three months planning this escape and you’re not
coming?”
“I’m going back for him,” replies Carlos, doing his best
to steady his voice to appear braver than he feels. Marta,
placing her hand on Blocchains’ arm says, “Don’t worry.
My uncle told me this might happen.” Shifting her attention to her older brother, Marta addresses him with the
same authority that she has used to hold their family
together her entire life, “Carlos, Uncle Emilio made his
choice to put the safety of all of us before his own. He
told me that if anything happened to him, my job would
be to make sure you don’t capitulate and ruin the plan.
We need you, all of us do. We came this far already and I
know Uncle Emilio would want us to see this through.”
The group all murmurs in agreement as Carlos looks
around at them through teary eyes. After a few moments
Carlos concedes, “You’re right, let’s get moving.”
Just as they had rehearsed a dozen times, the caravan lines
up the vans, one by one, with Carlos’s van in the front.
Carefully parking Carlos’ van next to the bellflowers,
