SILVERHORN RANCH
LA COMA RANCH
SOLA FE RANCH
Located in Deep South Texas, in the county
of Duval, sits the Silverhorn Ranch. The
ranch spans over 7,000 acres of brush
country. Through years of management and
manipulation, the Silverhorn boasts a variety
of habitat types that provide an optimal
environment for native and exotic species
alike.
Better known as “Red Gate” for its colorful entrance
15 miles north of Edinburg, La Coma ranch embraces
a history as boldly painted as its nickname. The
ranch started in 1883 as 130,000 acre tract of land
purchased from King Ranch by Rhode Islander
William Frederick Sprague; it remains perhaps the
only large holding ever sold twice by the King Ranch.
The ranch was named La Coma after the native tree
with chewable blue berries that grow on the land.
Sola Fe Ranch is founded by native Texan Colby
Stephens and headquartered in Lockhart, Texas.
Colby has been in the exotic industry for 30 years
capturing, consulting and breeding top quality
exotic and fallow herds. Exotic herds we specialize in
are fallow, sable, bongo, kudu, impala, dama gazelle,
and scimitar horned oryx.
The Silverhorn Ranch prides itself in
operating an animal breeding operation that
focuses on high quality animals and customer
service. We are raising animals to thrive in
the harshest of Texas climates. Silverhorn
currently has 7 species of breeding herds
which consists of black sable, greater kudu,
nyala antelope, gemsbok, axis, blackbuck,
and whitetail deer.
The Silverhorn Ranch can provide the quality
animals and integrity you are looking for.
By 1919, Sprague had sold his vast holdings back to
the King Ranch and moved to San Antonio with his
family.
In 1943, La Coma was purchased from the King
Ranch by brothers Lloyd Bentsen, Sr. and Elmer.
Lloyd Sr. suggested a coin toss as to how the ranch
would be divided. Elmer called “Heads” and won. He
asked his son Calvin to choose and Calvin answered,
“Take the north section because it has the house.”
Today Calvin and Marge Bentsen still own and run
the ranch. Both are avid big game hunters but have
turned their passion for hunting into conservation
efforts through breeding. What used to be pasture
for Santa Gertrudis and Bramham cattle is now
home to over 26 different exotic species from Africa,
India and Asia. Black Rhinos once thrived at La Coma
Ranch boasting one of the most successful breeding
operations in the US, but have since moved to Walt
Disney World and different zoos. At La Coma Ranch
we strive to breed with the best genetics and all of our
animals are on large tracts of land. We look forward
to helping all of our clients improve their genetics so
they can be enjoyed by many generations to come!
We have been leading the way in the fallow industry
since 1998 when Colby started running a fallow meat
operation, which he quickly shifted to focus on antler
growth. Now, with over 20 years of a closed herd
and being blessed with making the right decisions
on breeding, we consistently produce the biggest
fallow bucks. Not only do we boast the current SCI
world record and numerous other gold medal deer,
our breeding stock is highly sought after and our
current focus. We started a new era of excitement
in 2015, and took the fallow breeding market to the
next level, when we sold our breeder Irish Elk (Now
known as Thunderstruck). Our current breeders are
continuing to prove themselves. This is where all the
BIG bucks come from!
That being said, Sola Fe Ranch isn’t just fallow. We
have been building top quality super exotic herds
with genetic lines from top breeders of each species.
