A monolingual sentence builder is used here to orally consolidate the structures required for this
discussion of breakfast food and drink.
To begin (while the grid is empty on the board), read the first sentence in full: Zum Frühstück esse ich
immer ein Brötchen mit Butter. There are nine words and only six cells in the grid, so students can
work alone or in pairs or small groups to decide how to split the words (reminding them about the
parts of the sentence that rely on one another or are independent elements).
One click will display the full first sentence, split as shown across the cells.
Each item appears on a separate subsequent click across the second line.
Once this has been displayed and discussed, the elements can be slowly revealed on line 2. With each
new element, the possibilities to use with line 1 can be discussed, i.e. Morgens esse ich immer ein
Brötchen mit Butter; Zum Frühstück esse ich immer ein Brötchen mit Butter; Zum Frühstück esse ich
oft ein Brötchen mit Butter etc.
The same process is then repeated with the information for drinks. Students can work together to
come up with more versions. Suggested versions can be written on the slide at the end of the activity.
