Write a message of peace this
Christmas and help Rochester
Cathedral create a spectacular
art installation
seen in many Cathedrals including Liverpool, Lichfield,
Derby and Sheffield.
Rochester Cathedral has announced their next art
installation and they need your help to create it. In
February 2023 the Cathedral will be transformed by
‘Peace Doves’ an artwork by Peter Walker Sculptor.
The Very Rev'd Dr Philip Hesketh says ‘In a world of
constant conflict the need to work and pray for peace
should be central to our lives. This artwork provides a
visible expression for our hopes and dreams for a better
world.’
The artwork is made up of thousands of handmade paper
doves which will be displayed in the Cathedral. It brings
a message of peace and hope as the doves collectively
form a beautiful artwork which as a whole reflects joining
together in unity, peace and hope moving forward.
Throughout history the dove has been viewed as a symbol
of peace in many different cultures. For example in Greek
mythology the dove is a symbol of the renewal of life, and
liturgically within the Bible the dove appears at the
Baptism of Jesus in the river Jordon and in the teachings
of Noah and the Ark as a symbol of the Holy Spirit
Over the next few months Rochester Cathedral will be
asking visitors and the local community to write messages
of peace on a paper dove when they come to the Cathedral. The doves will be collected and stored before being
installed in February when the spectacular installation
opens.
The doves are available now for visitors to write a message
of peace. Visitors are encouraged to share images using
the hashtag #peacedoves
