shrine chapel at the east, and the complication of equal
access is correspondingly great. We achieved full accessibility through the length of the cathedral by means of
ramps and platform lifts, each taking up half the width of
the aisles. An ingenious solution was devised for giving
access to the shrine chapel by means of a processional
axial flight of steps leading to a platform flanked by a platform lift to the north and a flight of shallow steps to the
south. This won a St Albans Heritage Award.
