STUDENT
SHADOWS
Since joining the State Department of Education in July 2021, State Superintendent Mohammed Choudhury has visited all
of Maryland’s local education agencies - 23 counties and Baltimore City - to engage with students, staff, principals, and
local superintendents throughout the state. Visits consisted of shadowing a student during classes, school programs, lunch
and even recess! During these fully-immersive experiences, the State Superintendent actively participated in classwork,
physical education, and student-led meetings. These shadows were followed by a shadow of the local education agency’s
superintendent and/or school principal. Each visit was documented on the Maryland State Department of Education’s
social media platforms detailing the day’s happenings.
DORCHESTER COUNTY
State Superintendent Choudhury shadowed a Mace’s
Lane Middle School 8th-grade student in Dorchester
County Public Schools. The visit involved analyzing
primary sources about the Whiskey Rebellion in
Social Studies and experimenting with potential and
kinetic energy in Science. Up next was a shadow
of ‘busy bee’ Principal Gibson at the Sandy Hill
Elementary School ‘hive’ where educators teach
students using the Science of Reading strategies.
MONTGOMERY COUNTY
State Superintendent Choudhury shadowed 12th-grade
student Jorge, an aspiring architect enrolled in the
Architecture Program at Thomas Edison High School of
Technology and the Engineering Academy at Wheaton
High School. The first class of the day was Architecture,
where students engaged in a group review of studentdrafted site plans. Next up, Calculus with Applications
and exercises in finding the derivative of functions.
After a morning of learning with Jorge, Superintendent
Choudhury was welcomed with “a-deer-able” student
art for the shadow of Principal Steffan at Highland
Elementary School, where educators and staff prioritize
their students’ writing and publishing.
WICOMICO COUNTY
State Superintendent Choudhury shadowed Cayson,
a 2nd-grade Beaver Run Elementary School student.
Their morning of learning was filled with phonics
lessons, sentence-building puzzles, and a class readaloud of “Monkey and Rabbit.” During Music class,
students engaged in festive singing and dancing.
Next, he shadowed Wicomico County Superintendent
Dr. Micah Stauffer at Junior Achievement of the
Eastern Shore. Their mission is to inspire and prepare
youth to succeed with learning focused on financial
literacy, workforce and entrepreneurship.
