Emelia Archer
Embodying a felt experience through a female
gaze, Archer’s practice is centred around
the visual representation of narrative. Using
the medium of oil paint to produce works
reconfiguring and recontextualising imagery
which alludes to lived experience. Within this,
she is currently producing a body of work
exploring a narrative of female anxieties.
Through distortion, her pieces appear
reminiscent of memory or trauma, capturing
an image eerily familiar but detached from
reality. Archer’s aim is not on likeness of
representation but to reconfigure a tactile
but not fully materialised version of events
which becomes the viewer's perspective.
To find ambiguity within a work which
speaks simultaneously of both elation or
misery; bringing these moments back into
the collective consciousness and embody
the ambivalence of seeing through paint.
