Where do you find inspiration?
I find inspiration in mundane,
everyday occurrences. Intrigued
by the idea of a ‘turning point’
within a moment, I wish to create
an image which oscillates between
euphoria and tragedy, trepidation,
and serenity. I take reference from
poor quality or accidental photos as
well as objects or spaces which may
be deemed as ‘ugly’, overlooked
or ordinary domestic scenes. I find
this space interesting as they are
moments of in-between, and to paint
with this as reference immortalises
a moment in time in a way that
photography cannot. Ultimately
allowing ambiguity to direct my
spector’s reading while forcing a time
or emotion back into their collective
consciousness. I feel I present these
moments through a lense of female
anxiety. Wishing to encapture a felt
experience, one which becomes
tactile, through a regurgitation of
unremarkable or nondescript imagery.
What’s the concept behind your piece,
Fragments?
Through this piece I aimed to present
a voyeuristic, fleeting image. I find
myself constantly drawn to motifs
such as, jewellery, shoes, makeup,
sections of clothing; items which
serve as layers of falseness and
simultaneously serve as an extension
of the self without a need to involve
the figure. By cropping into these
moments in time while distorting the
reading through use of colour and
brush strokes, this piece presents
itself as a familiar but distant scene.
In a sense a visual representation
of fragmented memories or a vague
reconfiguration of a particular
incident. In this way, the painting
becomes reminiscent of memory or
trauma, aiming to personify a felt
emotion or universal experience
rather than the object itself. I most
endeavour to find a moment in the
painting where abstraction meets
figuration. Endeavouring to find a
place in the work that can be read as
either solace amongst chaos or chaos
amongst solace.
