Why do you make art?
I find making art very meditative,
whether that be painting or another
creative outlet. I make art because it
makes me feel happy and enriches
my life. When I’m painting someone,
I find that the way I look at them
changes, instead of seeing them as a
person I start to see all the colour and
shadow in their face, the little quirks
that make them, them. I’ve found
that this has had an impact on the
way I look at my life. I have a greater
appreciation for things that might be
easily overlooked, and start to look
at things asking myself how would I
paint that? What colours would I use?
In short, painting helps me to see my
life as more of a painting and that is
something I find comforting.
How has your style changed over
time?
I would say that my style has
definitely changed over time. I can
see much more confidence in the
paintings I am making now, the scale
is much larger, and the subject matter
is more considered. Having said that
I have always been consistent in my
love for portraiture, that much hasn’t
changed.
all summer. We are drinking crisp
refreshing white wine whilst eating
fresh crab, warm bread with dipping
oil, olives, sun dried tomatoes.
Grayson Perry has made all the
ceramics we are eating off and Munch
has told us the true narrative of The
Scream. We never run out of things to
talk about and decide we must do this
every year. Life is good.
You’re hosting a dinner party for 3
artists, who would it be and why?
Edvard Munch, Leonard Cohen and
Grayson Perry. Our dinner party
would come directly after a day on a
beach on the Greek island of Hydra,
where Leonard Cohen spent so much
time. Even though its Cohen’s house
in Hydra, I’m organising everything
for the dinner party as a thank you for
letting the three of us stay with him
