Where do you find inspiration?
I work by using multiple reference
images to construct a painting where I
can project my own feeling of wanting
to be in a different space. This means
that I find inspiration in anything that
triggers these feelings, this could be
found imagery, photographs that remind
me of a place, faces that seem familiar,
old photographs of people I know etc.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
Peter Doig, Michael Armitage, Hurvin
Anderson and Sydney Nolan are artists
that I frequently look at, I am interested
in how they project narrative, memory,
history, and nostalgia into their work. I
also look at the techniques of classical
portrait painters like Frans Hals and
John Singer Sargent.
How has your style changed over time?
I used to be mostly interested in portrait
painting, focusing on how I can best
represent the people that I am painting.
But I am now more interested in how
I can use imagery of faces, figures,
and landscapes to communicate more
personal feelings, allowing myself as the
artist to be more present in the work.
