How do you see your work evolving
in the future?
Watercolour paintings are an
important part of my practice, I
create small watercolour sketches as
references for larger oil paintings. I
hope that in the future I can develop a
process of creating oil paintings that
has a similar fluidity to watercolour.
What advice would you give to a first
year?
Allow your paintings to mean less,
meaning will come later.
How do you keep motivated?
I try to leave the studio when I am
still pleased with how things are
going, so that the next day I’m
looking forward to picking up where
I left off. Rather than overdoing
things and dreading starting again the
next day.
Why do you make art?
I enjoy it.
How do you decide on your colour
palette for a piece?
My colour palette is influenced by
nature, I am drawn to colours that
remind me of the Kenyan landscape
(dusty reds, bright greens, and pinks).
I will use these colours to produce
watercolour paintings which I then
use as references when choosing
colours for oil paintings.
Do you find inspiration from looking
at the history of painting?
Yes, I love looking at artists’ sketches
and preparatory paintings that
worked before photography was
popularized. How they use paintings
and sketches as references for larger
works that they produced in the
studio. I often look at John Singer
Sargent’s watercolour paintings and
admire his ability to translate what he
sees without overdoing it.
