What are the concepts and inspiration behind your
work?
The inspiration for my works lies within my strong
interest in the research of Female Pathology, the
grotesque, and Cabinet of Curiosity. The theme
is primarily based on the lack of understanding
of Female Pathology taking place in the modern
day. This misunderstanding throughout history
has led to an outstanding misdiagnosis and lack
of treatment for conditions within biological
women. Within my more recent works, I am
wanting to show the systematic injustice and
consequences of gender-biased medical research.
This topic can closely relate to Scientifica, a
segment within Cabinet of Curiosity which is the
biological research collecting. This commonly
includes specimens preserved in jars, of which
my colour palette is inspired by, portraying an
unsettling subject with abnormal skin tones
inevitably gaining a reaction from the viewer.
Pencil drawings visually connect to the old
scientific study of the body, this is usually down
to the medium used and the details included. I find
the visual aesthetic of my works grotesque and
alienlike as well as intriguing.
How do you decide on the colour palette for a
piece?
I always start a piece with yellow colours and
tones, as I enjoy a saturated appearance. This is
mostly inspired from wet specimens in jars. The
second set of colours are often unpredictable,
I subconsciously add colours as I am creating
that comes to me through the moment. I add
skin and flesh tones to give the piece an overall
grotesque appearance, connecting to the fact that
the diseases, deformities and defects depicted are a
live subject as well as a preservation. I find having
more vibrancy and colours in my work adds to the
concept of ‘the more you look the more you see’.
