While we have our own target to fill 5% of our job vacancies with
ex-offenders, where appropriate to do so, we also work to encourage
more businesses to do the same.
As an operator of prisons, we launched Starting Fresh in March 2023. This programme of activity aims to not just
encourage businesses and hiring managers to give applicants with a criminal conviction a chance, but to actually
understand how they can engage with prisons to recruit people close to release – a need heightened by the current
labour shortage.
By shining a light on the skills and qualifications many are developing during their time in custody, and telling the
inspiring stories of prison-leavers, we have already encouraged a number of large organisations to step forward.
