Fashion and make-up is really to create a moment and a fantasy and a
feeling. My make-up brand is with my Mom. We have been doing it together
since I was about 15. We worked together to get some funding. We’re kind
of just trying to regain funding to continue the collection because starting a
make-up brand is extremely difficult. It gets easier with time when you have
more consumers, but really the first couple of years is just like breaking and
that’s kind of where we’re at, but I would love to continue with that.
And tattoos?
Tattoos yes… I would love to have many more than I have. I have quite a
lot of tattoos and they’re extremely important to me. I feel like they can say
so much about me. Whilst I don’t have any words on my body, I definitely
plan to. They make me feel very comfortable.
or the benefit of readers outside of the UK, there are interesting
undercurrents in London, with clubs like Monster, Queen, Wraith,
Riposte, Subversa. There’s a whole lot of much younger kids that
reside under the radar of everything else. They’re not really part of
any community, they’re like a mixture of all of them. I asked Jazmin
about this:
I would agree. I started going clubbing at an extremely young age.
There’s a lot of issues with that, and whilst I don’t take back anything in my
life because it all leads me
here, I did a lot of things
and a lot of things were
done to me. That kind
of robbed me of having
any adolescence. Then,
I was kind of the only
one that wasn’t wearing
completely black when
I went to Slimelight,
I was looking around
and there would just be
me and all these bright
colours. And all of these
much older than me,
very traditional Goths,
but I still went. I only go
really now if there’s some
live music event or some
performance that I wish
to see. I wouldn’t really
just go clubbing. It might
actually be a nightmare
for me. But I do see that
a lot of people that look
kind of like Internet based.
There’s a kind of new crowd of kids around suddenly, there’s a lot of Asian
kids at clubs as well, like Monster Queen.
Yeah my mum is Asian and Asian fashion and culture is always
interesting. They just have another take on like fashion that is just so
carefree and that you can see they’re just not really questioning anything
about it, which is really how you get the best results. The moment you start
questioning, like what is this and is anyone going to like this and should I do
this or this? You know you start kind of looking like the next person because
we’re all thinking the same thing which is ‘oh my God. I don’t want to get
judged’, but the moment that you let all that go is when you start to actually
look a little bit different.
Yeah, I’d imagine you’d be huge in Japan.
I haven’t been and I really wish to go.
I did an exhibition there for summer. It was mixed with lots of outfits from
videos and a lot of my paintings and props because when I was independent,
I’d make all my props by hand and paint loads of things for the videos and
just be really hands on with it so we showcased all of that. They were all in
their outfits, some of them even recreating the make-up and style, you can
see they all put such effort.
Cultivating this strong and eclectic visual image Jazmin Bean has released
a series of music videos which can be found on Youtube. Produced, and mostly
written, directed, styled, by themself over a period of several years, the videos
defy both categorisation and comparison (the film director Floria Sigismondi is
probably the closest I can think of ). I guess people would call them disturbing
but that’s probably the wrong word. Powerful and engaging, I found them like
a collision of pop culture, surrealism, horror movies, and experimenting with

have serious goals because I’m so existential. And I’m extremely aware
that I’m going to die one day, and I’ve been like, you know, brushing death
…. I’m just about escaping brushing deaths right now, but uhm, I find it
hard to just go out when I don’t feel like I’m representing myself. I always
leave the house in a look.
Referencing make-up, I asked Jazmin about the influences of horror films,
black metal fairy tales and also about having a personal make-up range company:
It seems in some ways that make-up has kind of replaced fashion. To an extent,
as in, there’s no street movements, but there’s a lot of make-up movements
where people are playing with cosplay and make-up - alter egos perhaps…
Yeah, I think make-up can totally transform you, and I think people think
I wear so much make-up to escape the way that I look without make-up. I
love the way I look without make-up. It’s just that to me it can be boring at
times. Not all the time, but I’m so inspired by these creatures that are like us.
That’s why The Dark Crystal is my favourite movie because I really want to
go somewhere to a different place and I don’t mind if you know. Obviously
when they talk to me, I want them to see me as human, but if I’m putting
together an extravagant look, they can see me as whatever they want to.
