It’s a parade inside Baton Rouge. On April 2, head
coach Kim Mulkey led LSU — yeah, that LSU — to a 10285 victory over Iowa in the NCAA Women’s Basketball
National Championship game. It marked LSU’s first
NCAA basketball title in school history, and it was done
in historic fashion. Alexis Morris, Angel Reese, Flau’jae
Johnson, LaDazhia Williams and Kateri Poole made up
the starting five, but after the Tigers found themselves
in foul trouble, the bench showed up to save the day.
Graduate transfer Jasmine Carson scored 21 first-half
points; sophomore Last-Tear Poa drew two critical
offensive fouls against Iowa’s Caitlyn Clark; and
freshman Sa’Myah Smith provided a pivotal block. The
Tigers shattered scoring records, recording the most
single quarter, first-half and total points of any national
championship game. On April 5, Louisiana did what
Louisiana does best: celebrated the championship
with a parade. The team descended the hill on
campus with each player in her own convertible. y
brought up the rear in a stylish sequin jacket, and then,
the thousands of fans lining the streets rushed into the
PMAC for a championship ceremony, capping off an
unforgettable season with a 34-2 overall record.
