With a team including five transfers and four freshmen,
Women’s Basketball had a season slogan: “Piece it
2gether.” Angel Reese, a former Maryland star, was
one of the team’s new puzzle pieces. The sophomore
forward found her place in the paint, breaking the
NCAA record for most double-doubles in a single
season with 34, one for every Tiger win. Originally from
Baltimore, Reese’s big personality fit right into Baton
Rouge culture. She quickly became a fan favorite and
earned the moniker “Bayou Barbie.” Reese always has
her nails, lashes and hair in place, even on the court,
but she’s not afraid to play tough and trash talk. Social
media exploded when Reese used John Cena’s “You
can’t see me” move during the championship game.
With millions of followers, Reese is a top NIL earner, and
she had several viral moments throughout the season,
like the “Shoe Block,” when she blocked an Arkansas
player’s shot with one hand while holding her shoe,
which had inconveniently fallen off her foot, in the
other. Reese made headlines nearly every week of
the season. She was denoted SEC Player of the Week
seven times and the 2023 Final Four Most Outstanding
Player following the Tiger’s championship win.
