PATROL DIVISION
In 2021, personnel assigned to Headquarters continued to have an increased responsibility to
meet the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. In order to avoid unnecessary exposure of officers and the public, the Department continued to modify its response to certain low-priority calls
for service, which involved handling some calls for service over the phone. The Headquarters
Division is staffed by nine police officers and three sergeants.
The Patrol Division, including Detention and Headquarters personnel, is staffed by 119 officers,
25 sergeants, 6 lieutenants, and 1 captain. These 151 dedicated professionals work to ensure public safety within the City of Hartford on a 24/7 basis, 365 days a year. To date, more than 50% of
the officers assigned to patrol in the city have more than 5years of experience. This greatly contributes to citizens receiving a better quality of service from their Police Department.
The Detention Division provides temporary, safe detention for in-custody offenders until they
are released to the State judicial system. This responsibility includes housing offenders overnight,
weekends, and during holidays. The Detention Division is staffed by 1 civilian public safety detention officer, 11 police officers, 3 sergeants, and 1 lieutenant. Headquarters personnel are responsible for staffing the Teleserve area, addressing walk-in complaints, as well as calls received
for non-emergency police services.
