MAJOR CRIMES DIVISION
The Hartford Police Major Crimes Division has the responsibility
of investigating serious crimes and providing court testimony to
bring offenders to justice. The Major Crimes Division consists of two
categories, Crimes Against Persons (CAPERS) and Crimes Against
Property (CAPROP). CAPERS detectives are assigned to investigate
violent acts, including homicides, serious assaults, robberies, and
certain dangerous domestic incidents. CAPROP detectives are assigned to investigate non-violent offenses, which include burglaries, arson, fraud, and pattern larcenies. The Major Crimes Division
works in conjunction with the Crime Scene Division, Violent Crime
Unit, and Patrol Division.
A new unit called the Shooting Response Team was introduced in
the spring of 2021. The Shooting Response Team is a unit comprised of 6 detectives whose duties are to investigate all non-fatal
shootings. Since the inception of the Shooting Response Team, arrests for non-fatal shootings have gone up 162 percent since 2020.
The Major Crimes Division currently consists of one lieutenant,
three sergeants, and twenty-two detectives. Three of the Major
Crimes Division detectives are cross-sworn with the FBI, and one
detective is cross-sworn with the Secret Service. The Major Crimes
Division has one full-time DEA agent, a full-time domestic violence
specialist from the Interval House, and a full-time Department of
Corrections of昀椀cer assigned to the Division.
