SIZING FOR VIOLINS
1. STANCE
1. Standing up straight with open shoulders, the
player’s feet should be shoulder-width apart.
The player’s left arm should then be extended out
straight to the side with palm facing up, and their
head turned to the left.
Once they are in this position, place the violin on the
player’s shoulder under their chin. We recommend
using a shoulder rest.
2. ARM LENGTH
2a. Position the violin on the
player’s shoulder under their chin.
The scroll of the violin should
reach the wrists and the player
should also be able to comfortably
wrap their 昀椀ngers around the
entire scroll.
3. HAND SIZE & FINGER SPAN
2b. When the player’s hand is in
play position, the angle of their
left elbow should be at a 90
degree angle.
3. Lastly, check that the player’s
昀椀ngers are long enough to do the
stretches required. A simple scale
on the lowest string, with the use of
the fourth 昀椀nger should be enough
to con昀椀rm the size. If dif昀椀culties are
had placing the fourth 昀椀nger in the
correct position, it may be best to
use an instrument one size smaller.
USEFUL SIZING INFO
18
Playing on a violin that is the wrong size can affect a
player’s ability to learn, and can also cause neck and
shoulder problems to develop.

Generally, we like to size on the smaller side. This is
because smaller violins are much easier to play on,
especially for beginners. If you are having to choose
between two sizes, then we recommend going
for the smaller of the two. The violin ‘Age to Size
Guide’ to the right is a good place to start. This is a
very general guide that is based on our experience
sizing violins in the store.
