SIZING FOR DOUBLE BASSES
1. HEIGHT
2. ARM LENGTH
1. To begin, the player should be standing up
straight behind the bass, slightly to the right of the
bass. The spike of the bass should not be extended.
Ideally the players eyes will line up with the nut of
the double bass.
2. Ask the player to reach over and touch the top of the
bridge as pictured. If the player struggles to touch
the bridge without reaching over too much, then the
size is probably too big.
USEFUL SIZING INFO
Playing on a double bass that is the wrong size can affect a
player’s ability to learn and can also cause hand, arm and back
problems to develop.
When sizing a double bass, it is important to take a step back
and look at the player’s physique as a whole. Generally, we
like to size on the smaller side. This is because smaller basses
are much easier to play on, especially for beginners. If you are
having to choose between two sizes then we recommend going
for the smaller of the two. The double bass ‘Age to Size Guide’
to the right is a good place to start. This is a very general guide
that is based on our experience sizing in the store.
