This lesson explores the history of how
mainstream news coverage of marginalized
groups has done signi昀椀cant harm, resulting
in legacies of mistrust that persist today. It
carefully describes how traditional news
organizations have improved their practices and
coverage, while noting that further progress is
needed. The lesson utilizes coverage of Black
Americans as a case history that helps frame the
larger topic and draw it into focus for students,
rather than trying to address all instances of
harmful coverage of marginalized groups.
Several educators have told us how powerful
and impactful the lesson is, including K.C.
Boyd, former NLP news literacy ambassador
for Washington, D.C., and the 2022 National
School Librarian of the Year, who said,
“The new lesson should
be nominated for an
award, it’s that good.”
