Fourth Annual National News Literacy Week
Jan. 23-27, 2023
The fourth annual National News Literacy Week (NNLW),
presented by the News Literacy Project and The E.W.
Scripps Company, explored the theme of building
trust in the news media and was our most successful
public awareness campaign with 350 million combined
impressions through public service announcements,
digital ads, social media and more.
•
55 organizations supported the week.
•
1,650 people attended seven events, including two
in-person events in Chicago and Washington, D.C.,
and a national, virtual NewsLitCamp.
•
More than 140 news articles educated the public
about the misinformation crisis, highlighted educator
and student stories and shared how trust in the news
media is critical for a thriving democracy.
Midterm Elections Misinformation Campaign:
Be Informed, Not Misled
On Sept. 15, 2022 — Democracy Day — NLP launched “Be informed,
not misled,” a public awareness campaign to counter misinformation
related to midterm elections by empowering voters to recognize false
information. A dedicated section of our website featured shareable
content on voting and elections, empowering news consumers to push
back against misinformation. We ran public service announcements,
co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters, that aired in Spanish
and English on television stations across the country and on social
media channels. The initiative culminated with three free webinars that
taught voters about the most common misinformation tactics and
offered strategies to resist them. Two were presented in partnership
with the League of Women Voters.
