AGRONOMY NEWS FROM
SEPTEMBER 2019
Farm business
sustainability
put to the test
Utilising new technology and Integrated Farm Management
alongside existing knowledge will be integral to the success
of growers for the future.
Following on from the successful
Helix grower launch in June,
the Helix team welcomed
a comprehensive range of
industry representatives and
suppliers including the AHDB,
NFU, Rothamsted, AIC, BASIS,
crop protection, seed breeders
and nutrition manufacturers,
machinery companies, LEAF, The
Game and Wildlife Conservation
Trust (The Allerton project) and
those involved in wider agricultural
business management.
Andrew McShane, Hutchinsons
Managing Director, opened the
session firmly highlighting that
increasing political, regulatory
and environmental challenges
determined a change in direction
was needed. Integrated Farm
Management properly supported
by technology goes someway to
addressing these issues and will
be the core to farming’s future.
Hutchinsons are taking the lead but
collaboration across the industry is
fundamental to making it work.
Stuart Hill, Head of Technology and
Innovation, then explained how
technology on its own does not
provide the answer. People and
their knowledge are required to
understand the technology and what
it can do, analyse information and
ultimately deliver beneficial advice
for efficiency, productivity and
profitability in a sustainable way. This
is the essence of what project Helix is
all about and being able to join it up
on a farm scale.
Stuart highlighted that it’s also clear
that growers want one system, such
as Omnia, to operate this approach
through reducing the need for
multiple platforms.
Andrew Pitts of J W Pitts, the Helix
Development Farm, explained that
for him and his brother it was about
sustainability and long-term viability.
Technology must answer the ‘so what
can it do for me’ question. He sees an
increasingly more strategic partnership
with Hutchinsons and the agronomist,
less field walking and more time spent
reviewing and understanding data.
