Using language mats in the MFL classroom - Flipbook - Page 3
2. Other ideas
• When teaching or revising classroom
language, the mats can be a tool for role-plays.
• Ask students to nd and use the
sentences/questions they will need for an
activity in pairs or groups.
• Use them as part of a game in class. In pairs
or in groups, one student challenges another
student(s) to respond to one of the questions/
instructions from the board or how do you say
X in the target language. This could be
developed into a weekly challenge for the
class.
• Use the mat to develop language awareness.
For example, are there similar w ords or
expressions in the target language and
English/Irish or another language they know?
What can they tell about word order by looking
at the language on the mat?
• Students work in groups and agree on the
most relevant sentence in a given situation.
For example, a tourist going shopping, at a
train station, asking for directions, etc.
• As students progress in their learning, they can
design new language mats with sentences/
structures related to tasks in the classroom
such as writing an opinion piece. For examples
