Teachers Empower Students
Adam Bressler ’19
Sometimes all it takes is one class, one moment, or one interaction to spark a passion that will lay the
groundwork for a student’s future. For Adam Bressler ‘19, that class was journalism. Adam, a member of
Field’s inaugural 6th grade class, started his journey at Field in 2012 and graduated in 2019. Growing up,
he loved sports and sports broadcasting and drew inspiration from Washington Wizards radio play-by-play
announcer Dave Johnson and his trademark “It’s there!” When an opportunity to get involved in the middle
school journalism program at Field presented itself, Adam didn’t hesitate. He was all in.
Adam continued to pursue journalism through an elective during
his freshman year, but he still had his sights set on sports broadcasting. He wanted to announce the varsity games at Field, but
as a freshman, he had to get buy-in first. He made the pitch to
his teachers and administrators who gave the okay for Adam to
offer commentary on a Burke-Field game, with an audience of
only a few teachers. When everyone realized how seriously Adam
approached this opportunity, the school allowed him to announce
more games. By his junior and senior years, Adam was broadcasting to a much larger audience during every home game.
“The incredible teachers set Field apart. They saw that
I worked hard when I was really interested in something.
They knew how to get me excited and helped me explore more.
What was most valuable was really instilling
that atitude … if you have an idea, you can make it happen!”

That experience helped shape his college plans. “I knew I wanted a big school for college, a school for
sports,” he said, and “University of Michigan has one of the biggest sports programs.” In the fall of his first
year of college, he got involved with the campus radio station. The station leaders were impressed by his
high school experience. Over his four years at Michigan, Adam covered countless games, often sharing
the press box with journalists from ESPN and Fox Sports. When he was a junior, he became executive
director of the sports program at the station, helping produce great commentary with a strong production
value and creating an environment that developed the talent of students hoping to pursue broadcasting
careers. He covered several bowl games during his tenure. As a senior, his broadcast from the Fiesta Bowl
amassed 236,000 listeners.
Adam graduated from the University of Michigan in May 2022 with a degree in public policy and economics.
He started a new position this fall as an economist with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
