Inspiring Faculty through Professional Development
History Teacher Elena Young spent 12
weeks taking an online course through
the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American
History; "American Indian History: 1900
to the Present."
"One of my takeaways from the course is gaining
greater insight into an Indian worldview
and curricular philosophy,
which tends to be at odds with
Western linear thinking.
My Þnal research paper for the class was about
intergenerational trauma from federal
boarding schools. I plan to incorporate
my learning into my classes at Field
by teaching how historical events
have impacted Native peoples.”

English and History Teacher Dr. Kimberley Yates immersed
herself in a webinar series focused on artificial intelligence in
independent schools. She and a team of colleagues learned
from experts on the latest trends, tools, and strategies for
using AI in education and discussed concerns centered
around ethics and privacy.
“This series anticipated teachers' nervousness about the reality, pervasiveness,
and potential power of AI with an aim of exploring diferent beneÞts of it.
The training showed us various ways to incorporate it into our classrooms.
While I remain a bit of a Luddite on the mater, what really stuck with me was the
strategy of talking openly about it with students at the beginning of the year and
establishing norms together. The PD incorporated students who made clear that they want to
learn and push themselves, and that they, too, are concerned about AI. Of the many strategies discussed, I Þnd
myself looking forward to having that conversation up front with students, seting the norms with them,
and also working with Field departments to outline acceptable uses.”
