Creating the right
spaces for: meaningful
co-production and
influencing change
One of our core values is to be vocal so that people shape their
services and communities. This year we have continued to support
the Pro-Active Community (an independent charity created by Active
Prospects and led by many of the people we support) to campaign
on issues that matter to them.
In 2023 the Pro-Active Community created a Disability Taxi Charter,
in response to many negative experiences endured by people with
learning disabilities when using taxis. The Charter sets out how taxi
firms can be more disability aware across eight categories, such as
honesty, promptness, patience and assistance.
Redhill Road Runners and Metro Cars became the first two taxi
companies to sign up to the Charter. Terry from Road Runners
said: “The charter will go into new drivers’ induction booklet, so all
drivers know and are disability aware.” Metro Cars will include their
commitment to the Charter on their website to reassure people
when making bookings, and will display the Charter in their office.
We have continued to enable people to
influence health and social care services
this year:
+ People we support were invited to
participate in the groundbreaking
Together Project, which co-produced
training for 140 student midwives at
the University of Surrey to help them to
provide tailored support for parents with
a learning disability.
+ Experts by experience helped Surrey and
Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust to make
their communications more inclusive
and accessible for people with learning
disabilities.
+ Pro-Active Community members were
invited to address the Learning Disability
England’s annual conference on the
subject of health inequalities.
+ Working in partnership with Three Hands
charity, experts by experience helped a
high street bank to better understand
the risks and support needs for people
with learning disabilities when managing
their finances. As a result, the bank has
introduced Trusted Person Alerts on
individual accounts. These let customers
who might be struggling to manage their
finances independently select a friend
or family member to receive certain
mobile alerts, which will help them to be
supported with their finances.
