At a more macro-level, a dwindling of
the value placed on good governance
has been discernible at government-level
around the world, in both developing and
developed nations. ‘Tone from the top’
is often referred to as a major driver of
culture in organisations; this devaluation
has long been common amongst leaders
in certain countries, but it has been
troubling to see the trend spreading.
This being said, a few chickens came
home to roost in 2023. Behavioural
issues that came to light in politics and
business – from negligence and fraud
to sexual harassment and sedition were investigated and where necessary,
prosecuted. Among many public 昀椀gures
who found themselves in hot water, 2023
saw the conviction of the founder of the
bankrupt crypto exchange, FTX, Sam
Bankman-Fried, on numerous counts
of fraud. His highly innovative but
regulation-昀氀outing 昀椀rm collapsed in
early 2022 with liabilities of US$8 billion.
2023 was a year in which the importance
of good governance was re-emphasised,
and one in which regulators around the
world, post-pandemic, returned to
business-as-usual.
