Celebrating the Restoration
and Regeneration of Chester
Rows: A Milestone Achievement
We are thrilled to celebrate the successful completion of the Heritage Action Zone project to restore
and regenerate Chester Rows, funded by Historic England. This project has been a labour of love for
our team, working alongside conservation architects Donald Insall Associates for Cheshire West and
Chester Council to breathe new life into this architectural treasure.
The Restoration Journey
Our work began in 2022, following a detailed precontract survey of the Rows. This allowed our expert team
at Recclesia to make a carefully planned programme of
conservation-led improvements to the fabric of the buildings. Works undertaken included extensive conservation
and repairs to timber balustrades, plaster repairs to walls
and ceilings, safety upgrades to pedestrian bridges, masonry repairs and the decoration of ceilings, walls and stall
boards. Every aspect of the project was carefully executed
to maintain the historic appearance and essence of the
original structure. Despite its complexity, we managed the
work meticulously to minimise disruptions to the city centre. We also actively participated in engagement projects
aimed at increasing the awareness of the heritage and
historic importance of the Rows.
Architectural Significance
Chester Rows is a unique historic system of elevated
walkways stretching along the four principal streets of the
city centre, each one meeting at 'The Cross' in the very
centre. Originating in the 13th century, the half-timbered
structures span elegantly above street-level shops, providing access to a second tier of shopfronts. Consisting of 132
historic buildings with a fascinating mix of Grade I, Grade
II* and Grade II architecture, the Rows offer a captivating
journey through various architectural styles, materials and
intricate details, making each step a walk-through history.
Over 300 commercial businesses operate from the buildings nestled within the Rows, representing a diverse mix
of national and local retailers, independent establishments, and vibrant community spaces
