Eaglemont
Words by David Chandler (architect)
L
ocated within a prestigious precinct of
Eaglemont, this home pays homage to the
pioneering spirit of Walter Burley Griffen’s 1914
subdivision. Our design brief aimed to create
a robust, timeless family home that embodied
Griffen’s philosophy of shared living within
a natural garden theme of the estate.
The residence is crafted to capture the
expansive views of Greater Melbourne whilst
maintaining a strong connection to Outlook Park
at its rear. Built into the hillside, the four-level
home presents largely as a two-storey structure
from both the street and the park, blending
seamlessly within its surrounds.
The house is organised around a series of key
living zones, each with floor-to-ceiling windows
fostering a continuous dialogue with nature.
A central garden infuses the interior with natural
light, furthering a connection between indoor
and outdoor spaces. Every feature of the house
has been thoughtfully curated to provide luxury
and functionality incorporating premium finishes,
integrated technology, and quality fittings
and fixtures.
Architecturally, the intent for the residence
was to embrace simplicity through an honest
expression of materials. The main structure is
constructed from in-situ concrete which
features cantilevered floors and beautifully
detailed textured walls. The durable concrete
exterior is complemented by glass, steel and
timber elements that provide transparency,
detail, and warmth.
Sustainability features include exposed
concrete for thermal mass and low maintenance,
solar panels for energy efficiency, 40,000 litres
of rainwater storage, an integrated fresh air
system, double glazing, external sliding screens
for privacy and sun control and an extensive
green roof that increases biodiversity and
reduces heating & cooling requirements.
Built to last beyond a lifetime, 23 Outlook
Drive exemplifies enduring quality through robust
use of materials and timeless design principles.
